The spiritual malady is the result of my being out of order with my higher power who I choose to call God. I was the director in the drama of life and managing the world so I could get what I thought I needed to feel ok. Fear and resentment dominated my thoughts and I made decisions based on self which caused me harm and harmed others. The spiritual struggle scale and subscales were tested separately as mediators in models with trauma group as the predictor and PTSD symptomatology as the outcome, controlling for the level of PTSD symptoms reported at Time 1. Mediation analyses were conducted using bootstrapping, a nonparametric statistical procedure that uses repeated sampling to estimate and provide a confidence interval for the indirect effect of the independent variable (IV) on the dependent variable (DV) through the mediator (M).

This study presents ways in which spiritual struggle reflects negative personal meanings for stressful events and provides evidence that struggle can facilitate the development and maintenance of PTSD symptoms. Specifically, spiritual struggle may be part of victims’ maladaptive cognitions and emotions about the causes and implications of traumatic events. Future research should examine whether a meaning system that is retained but altered in this way is more adaptive than losing the meaning system altogether. Although stressful events, both those that qualify as trauma and those that do not, may lead to PTSD symptoms, traumatic events are hypothesized to lead to higher levels of symptomatology. Finally, it is hypothesized that spiritual struggle will mediate the relationship between trauma and PTSD symptoms. Exploratory analyses are conducted to identify the strength and direction of the relationships between the subscales of spiritual struggle and PTSD symptoms.

All variables were assessed for normality, and transformations were applied as merited (see below). The practice of compassion is a spiritual experience with a spillover benefit—compassion breeds more compassion. Scientific research provides evidence that the experience of compassion toward a single individual facilitates compassion toward others.

Lastly, at Time 2, participants indicated on the PCL how much they had been bothered in the past month by the event which they selected as being the most stressful or distressing since coming to college. Spiritual discontent (Pargament et al., 2000) involves anger with God, questioning God’s love, or wondering whether one has been abandoned by God.
Why meditation? My personal story
Some predictive codes are inborn, instincts, but humans actually have very few instincts. Prejudice comes from the predictive codes in the shadows of the brain. We accumulate threat and trauma codes throughout a lifetime that bias the system towards threat and trigger threat physiology easily.
Understanding the Concept of Spiritual Malady
Also, they are passive, in the sense that people do not have an influence over the phenomenon. Below is an overview of the 12 admissions that support the 12 steps toward recovery. Addicts and alcoholics may rid themselves of their drug or alcohol dependency by completing the Twelve Step process. This will allow them to undergo the required shift in thought that will free them from their addiction. 1It is important to note that some negative cognitions may reflect objective appraisals of a negative situation, such as likelihood of recurrent exposure. One of the core characteristics that makes people vulnerable to addiction (and is also amplified as a consequence of active addiction) is a sense of internal emptiness—a pervasive feeling of being hollow, empty, of something missing.

In the present sample, most students indicated they were at least slightly religious (64.1% at Time 1 and 59.2% at Time 2) and at least slightly spiritual (73.5% at Time 1 and 70.6% at Time 2). Spiritual awakenings occur when we see

BIG BOOK CHAPTER 5
Trauma victims may feel let down or betrayed and experience a sense of mistrust (for a summary, see Brewin & Holmes, 2003) or anger (e.g., Andrews, Brewin, Rose, & Kirk, 2000), and some individuals may direct these beliefs and resulting feelings toward God. Spiritual discontent has been related to higher levels of depression, suicidality, and PTSD symptoms in a variety of trauma samples (e.g., Exline, Yali, & Lobel, 1999; Harris et al., 2008). Each time we wake up from a modus operandi state of unconscious reflexive autopilot thinking and reacting and become mindfully aware of our internal and external experience, there is an awakening of spirit. It is a spiritual awakening to realize our attitude and outlook come from within and that we have the capacity to adjust them when we make a conscious choice to do so.
- By integrating spirituality into addiction recovery, individuals can find strength, hope, and purpose.
- This “fourth dimension”, which we find out in the 10th Step is the “world of the Spirit”, takes us beyond the physical, mental, and emotional dimensions of life — and eliminates the selfishness (ego) of the “spiritual malady.” The term “spiritual malady” does not mean that our “spirit” is sick.
- Punishing God Reappraisal as partial mediator of the relationship between trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms, controlling for baseline PTSD symptoms.
- Our brains are constantly searching to see if we are safe or threatened and this subaware mechanism fine tunes the system based on the incoming information.
- We also house traumatic memories in the threat centers of our brains that are slightly different than predictive codes as they may bubble up to awareness or into nightmarish dreams.
